L-Ergothioneine is a naturally rare, sulfur-containing amino acid first isolated in 1909 from the ergot fungus. Decades later, it was also detected in human tissues and organs, with the highest concentrations found in red blood cells, liver, and kidneys. Yet, despite its physiological relevance, the human body cannot synthesize L-Ergothioneine and can only obtain it through dietary intake.
This amino acid is chiral, existing in two configurations: D- (dextro) and L- (levo). Only the L-form is required and utilized by the human body, whereas D-Ergothioneine is not naturally occurring and may accumulate in tissues, potentially posing risks.
