5-Hydroxytryptophan 5-HTP

5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a kind of amino acids. It acts as a precursor to serotonin (serotonin,5-HT) in the human body (and in turn as a precursor to melatonin). Several double-blind studies have shown that 5-HTP can increase brain serotonin levels, improve depression and promote melatonin production, improve sleep quality, and suppress appetite.

5-HTP is classified as a pharmaceutical ingredient in some countries. In the United States, United Kingdom and Canada, 5-HTP is marketed as a dietary supplement.

Taking 5-HTP converts it into serotonin in the body, but serotonin can't cross the blood-brain barrier into the brain. Therefore, 5-HTP must first pass through the blood-brain barrier and then be converted into serotonin in the brain in order to truly play the role of stabilizing mood and promoting sleep quality. After taking 5-HTP orally, about one-third to one-half can actually be converted to serotonin in the brain, and a large portion will be converted to serotonin before entering the brain's blood circulation
