S-Adenosyl-methionine Disulfate Tosylate (SAM-e) is a metabolite that binds the sulfur-containing amino acid methionine to adenosine triphosphate, the main energy substance of the human body. SAM-e, the active form of methionine (Met), was first discovered by Cantoni in 1952. SAM-e is synthesized in vivo from Met and ATP by the SAM-e synthetase.

In the human body, SAM-e is an important physiologically active substance that participates in more than 40 biochemical reactions and is an active precursor of sulfur-containing compounds such as glutathione, cysteine, taurine and coenzyme A.
