Phytosphingosine is one of the core natural components of lipids (oils) in the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of skin) of human skin, accounting for approximately 15% of the total lipids in the epidermis. It is a key "raw material" for the synthesis of ceramides. Ceramide is the "cement" of intercellular lipids, responsible for firmly bonding skin cells together to form a strong skin barrier.
It was originally discovered from plants such as wheat and rice, and thus was named "plant" phytosphingosine. However, it exists naturally in human skin and is synthesized by the skin itself.
Currently, phytosphingosine used commercially is mainly obtained through plant extraction or biological fermentation technology, BrightGenix™ phytosphingosine is from fermentation.
